Viktor Gyokeres was officially unveiled to Arsenal fans today in Singapore, a moment that largely overshadowed the Gunners’ 3-2 pre-season victory over Newcastle United.
The £64 million signing from Sporting greeted supporters at the National Stadium, though he has yet to train with his new teammates.
Manager Mikel Arteta expressed his excitement about the acquisition, noting Gyokeres’ clear desire to join the club.
In the match, Newcastle’s Anthony Elanga opened the scoring early.
However, Arsenal quickly responded, with Mikel Merino leveling and an Alex Murphy own goal putting them ahead.
Newcastle’s Jacob Murphy equalized after the break, but 15-year-old sensation Max Dowman once again impressed, winning a penalty converted by Martin Odegaard to secure Arsenal’s win.
Arteta lauded Dowman’s “special” performance. The only concern for Arsenal was an injury to defender Riccardo Calafiori.
For Newcastle, manager Eddie Howe continued to address speculation surrounding Alexander Isak, reiterating that nothing had changed with the striker’s situation.
Arsenal next face Tottenham Hotspur in Hong Kong, while Newcastle will play Team K League in South Korea.
