The Uganda Cranes’ squad for the 2024 CHAN tournament has gone through several rounds of cuts, and after weeks of uncertainty, the final 25-man squad has been officially confirmed.
The journey began with a provisional roster of 41 players, which was trimmed down to 29, then 26, before the final cut was made.
Unfortunately, Jeromy Kirya, the talented attacking midfielder from BUL FC, has become the final casualty in what has been a brutal selection process.
Throughout the selection stages, Kirya, who has been one of the standout players in the Uganda Premier League, held onto hope that his performances would earn him a spot in the final squad.
However, despite his efforts, he was ultimately left out of the team, a tough blow for a player who many consider one of the best in the UPL in recent seasons.
At 28, Kirya had a standout 2023/24 season, contributing 10 goal involvements, scoring 4 goals and providing 6 assists.
His impressive performances for BUL FC had earned him widespread admiration and set him apart as one of the most consistent players in the league.
His exclusion from the squad comes as a surprise to many, given his form and work ethic.
While Kirya’s absence will be felt, it’s important to acknowledge his importance to the Cranes’ setup.
Despite not making the final roster, he remains a fan favorite and one of the most respected players in the current generation.
Like other players who were cut, Kirya will be watching the tournament from the stands, undoubtedly supporting his teammates with the same passion he brought to the pitch.
The 2024 CHAN tournament kicks off on August 2, but Uganda’s opening match will be on August 4 against Guinea.
This tournament will serve as a key part of the preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.
As Uganda begins its journey at CHAN 2024, all eyes will be on the Cranes to see if they can rise to the occasion. Kirya may have missed out on a place in the squad, but his talent can’t be underestimated.
