Just days before the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 kicks off, Algeria and Mauritania played out a 2-2 draw in their final friendly match on Tuesday night at the Mustapha Tchaker Stadium.
This crucial warm-up offered both teams a last chance to fine-tune preparations before heading to East Africa.
Mauritania’s Ahmed Ahmed opened the scoring in the 5th minute, but Algeria’s Mosalla Merbah equalized in the 21st. Sidi Tuda restored Mauritania’s lead in the 38th minute, putting them 2-1 up at halftime.
Algeria pushed hard in the second half, with Abderrahmane Meziane ultimately securing a 2-2 draw with a stoppage-time goal in the 90+1st minute.
The match, a valuable dress rehearsal, highlighted the readiness and tactical approaches of both squads. Algeria, last edition’s runners-up, are in Group C alongside Uganda, South Africa, Guinea, and Niger, aiming to go one better.
Mauritania, hoping to make a deep run, are in Group B with Tanzania, Burkina Faso, Madagascar, and the Central African Republic.
The TotalEnergies CHAN 2024 begins on Saturday, August 2, with hosts Tanzania facing Burkina Faso.
