Stanbic Black Pirates player Jones Kamiza says the team is ready to take on the challenge in what many have dubbed the “pool of death” at the upcoming 2025 Kabaka Coronation 7s.
Drawn in Pool B alongside Jinja Hippos, Elgon Wolves, and Central Region invitees Victoria Sharks, Pirates are gearing up for a tough test at Kyadondo Rugby Club this weekend. Kamiza remains unfazed.
“Well, it’s a competitive group, but I believe my boys are geared up,” Kamiza said after Tuesday’s live draw on NBS Sport. “We are mentally prepared for this tournament and physically. So, they’ll be up to the task—that I’m sure of.”
Pirates finished second overall in last year’s Uganda National Rugby 7s Series behind champions Heathens.
Their consistency through the 2025 season, where they lifted the Premiership title, has made them one of the favourites to contend for the 7s title.
On facing the resilient Hippos, Kamiza was respectful but confident.
“We know they’re a team that doesn’t easily give up. However, we’ve trained and prepared well enough for such moments. So, I believe we can take them on, head on, and hope for the best.”
Kamiza also hinted at an exciting lineup for fans to watch out for.
“Boys are very excited, geared up. It’s going to be a mixture of young boys and old boys. And yeah, we’re going to put up a show this season.”
The Kabaka Coronation 7s kicks off the 2025 Nile Special Uganda Rugby 7s Series, with seven stops scheduled across the country. All matches from Kyadondo will be broadcast live on NBS Sport.
