With CHAN 2024 around the corner, Uganda’s Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has issued a sweeping traffic plan to manage movement in Kampala and Entebbe.
The measures are aimed at ensuring the safe and timely transit of teams, officials, and guests during the continental football event.
At a press briefing on Thursday, Traffic Police spokesperson SP Michael Kananura confirmed that changes will take effect throughout the tournament period, with diversions activated where necessary, especially on match days.
The main routes earmarked for tournament-related convoys include the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway, Northern Bypass, and several key junctions such as Bwaise, Mulago, and Naalya Interchange.
Roads leading to stadiums like Mandela National Stadium (Namboole), Wankulukuku, Kadiba, and Kyambogo will see traffic adjustments to ease movement for official delegations.
“Diversions will only be applied if needed,” said Kananura. “On match days at Namboole, from midday, truck traffic will be diverted away from city routes toward Gayaza, Kalagi, and Mukono.
Other vehicles will be rerouted around Naalya, Seeta, Bweyogerere, and Kinawataka to reduce pressure near stadium corridors.”
A key restriction is at the Southern Playground Wing at Namboole, which will be strictly reserved for VIP-accredited vehicles. Fans without official vehicle stickers are advised to use alternative parking and avoid driving to the venue.
Pedestrian-only zones have also been designated, especially between Kireka-Nasanga junction and Jokas Hotel road. A cutoff point at Hared Petrol Station on Kinawataka Road will prevent cars from accessing Kireka Trading Centre during peak hours.
Lead vehicles will escort team convoys, and heavy Traffic Police deployment will ensure compliance. Kananura urged the public to cooperate fully and maintain discipline on the roads.
“This is a major continental tournament, and everyone has a role to play in making it a success. Plan early, follow instructions, and be patient,” he said.
CHAN 2024 kicks off August 2 in Tanzania with the first game of Uganda taking place on Monday August 4th.
