Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko, an 18-year-old wildcard, caused the biggest upset of the Canadian Open by defeating top seed Coco Gauff.
Mboko needed just 62 minutes to win 6-1 6-4, continuing a remarkable season that has seen her rise 280 places in the world rankings.
Mboko, who started the year at 333rd, will now move into the top 55. She will face Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the quarter-finals.
Gauff struggled with her serve, committing six double faults in the match.
The American praised her young opponent, saying, “I’m sure we’re going to have many more battles in the future.”
