In a shocking conclusion to the Cincinnati Open final, world number one Jannik Sinner retired from the match against Carlos Alcaraz because of illness.
The decision came just six days before Sinner’s US Open title defense.
Sinner appeared unwell from the start and was down 5-0 when he tearfully apologized to the crowd, saying he “felt really bad.”
While Alcaraz secured his first Cincinnati title, he expressed his disappointment, stating it was not the way he wanted to win.
Despite the loss, Sinner will remain the world number one. The two rivals are now preparing for the US Open, where they are set for a potential final showdown.
