Fernando Alonso has downplayed his chances of a front-row start at the Dutch Grand Prix, even after finishing second fastest in Friday’s practice.
The Aston Martin driver was just 0.087 seconds behind Lando Norris, but laughed off suggestions he could challenge the McLarens.
“I don’t think it’s within our reach to fight with the McLarens,” Alonso said, though he expressed optimism about competing with other top teams.
Norris topped both sessions, while his teammate Oscar Piastri was just 0.002 seconds slower than Alonso.
The day was not as smooth for others, with Lance Stroll, Alex Albon, and Kimi Antonelli all crashing.
Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton finished sixth for Ferrari after two spins, with teammate Charles Leclerc calling it their “worst” Friday of the season.
Alpine’s de facto boss Flavio Briatore cast doubt on the future of his driver Franco Colapinto, stating the young Argentine “needs another year or two” to be in Formula 1.
