Boxers from Uganda’s upcountry and rural areas have spoken out against the persistent stigma surrounding the sport as the National Novice Championship kicked off at Lugogo today.
Athletes say many communities still associate boxing with troublemaking, a perception they argue is holding back the sport’s growth in Uganda.
This year’s championship has attracted over 1,000 boxers from across the country, making it one of the largest turnouts in recent years.
The Novice competition forms the foundation of the Uganda Boxing Federation’s tournament structure, providing young fighters with a platform to display their skills and advance through the ranks.
For many competitors, the tournament represents more than a chance to claim victory in the ring. It is an opportunity to challenge negative stereotypes and show their communities that boxing can be a legitimate career path capable of transforming lives and producing champions.
The championship will run until Saturday, with organizers hoping the event will inspire greater acceptance and support for the sport nationwide.
