Djed Spence, the Tottenham full-back, has received his first call-up to the senior England men’s football team, a moment he hopes will inspire future generations.
The 25-year-old, who could become the first Muslim to represent the senior squad, was named in the team for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia.
Spence’s inclusion marks a significant turnaround in his career. After joining Tottenham, he was sent on loan three times—to Rennes, Leeds, and Genoa—before finally establishing himself as a key player last season. This impressive performance culminated in his recent call-up.
Expressing his gratitude, Spence said, “It’s a blessing—it’s just amazing. I don’t have the words really… In the toughest moments of my life, the darkest moments, I’ve always believed that God has always been by my side. It’s a big thing for me, my faith.”
Despite the historic nature of his potential debut, Spence stated he does not feel any extra pressure. “I just play football with a smile on my face, be happy, and the rest will take care of yourself,” he added, hoping his story will inspire others.
“If I can do it, you can do it. Not just Muslim kids, any child of any faith. Put your mind to something and you can do it.”
