Born Again Faith Federation leader Presiding Apostle Dr. Joseph Sserwadda has urged FUFA president Hon. Moses Magogo to consider restructuring Ugandan football by introducing a city-based national league.
Sserwadda argued that the current StarTimes Uganda Premier League limits opportunities for players since it relies on a narrow pool of clubs. He proposed a system where about 20 city-based teams would compete nationally, which he said would expand grassroots opportunities and spread talent development across the country.
“I advise the FUFA president to think about building a national league consisting of different teams from different cities. This will not only grow talent from the grassroots but also give life to playgrounds and facilities such as the once vibrant Mbale Municipal Stadium which is now inactive,” Sserwadda said.
He explained that a city-centered league could also drive sports tourism and infrastructure development. With teams required to host home and away fixtures, the model would encourage road upgrades, stadium renovations, and greater community involvement in sports.
Sserwadda further called for collaboration between the Ministry of Education and Sports, the Ministry of Tourism, and the Ministry of Youth to implement the proposed structure.
He stressed that beyond football, the initiative could support youth empowerment and contribute to Uganda’s wider economic growth.
Highlighting Uganda’s existing global profile in athletics and boxing, Sserwadda believes football can be restructured to position the country as a sports tourism hub in Africa.
