Uganda’s athletics contingent has landed in Tokyo and settled in ahead of the World Athletics Championships, which run from September 13 to 21.
The team’s campaign begins immediately on the opening day with Leonard Chemutai scheduled for the 3,000m steeplechase heats at 12:05 pm, followed by Aciru Knight in the 800m heats at 1:50 pm. Both athletes will look to set the tone for Uganda’s medal push.
Attention later in the day turns to the women’s 10,000m final at 3:30 pm, where Sarah Chelangat, Joy Cheptoyek, and Rebecca Chelengat line up in what is expected to be one of the most competitive races of the championships.
The trio carries Uganda’s strongest hopes on day one, with the country’s history in long-distance running raising expectations for a podium challenge.
Uganda has established itself as a consistent producer of world-class endurance athletes, and the Tokyo championships offer another chance to add to its growing reputation on the global stage.
