Uganda Flags Off 22-Member Paralympic Team for World Championships

The Uganda Paralympic Committee has today officially flagged off a 22-member delegation bound for four major World Championships, combining a wider multi-sport squad with the core athletics team unveiled earlier this month.

The group includes 14 athletes and seven officials. Seven of the athletes are headed to the World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi from September 26 to October 5.

Leading that squad is sprinter Fred Masisa, the team captain, joined by Paralympic gold medalist David Emong in the T46 1500m, Jonas Oryema (T13 1500m and 5000m), Kaddu Venswa (T47 400m), Prisca Aciro (T47 400m), Fred Oija (Ab 400m) and Anna Anzoa in the F47 javelin.

They have been training at Teryet High Altitude Centre in Kapchorwa and at Namboole Stadium under national head coach Vincent Mutagubya.

Beyond athletics, two swimmers will compete at the Toyota World Para Swimming Championships in Singapore, one archer will take part in the World Archery Para Championships in Korea, and four powerlifters will contest the Elite World Championships in Cairo.

Speaking at the send-off in Kampala, Uganda Paralympic Committee president Mpindi Bumali praised the athletes’ resilience despite limited funding.

He said the delegation is focused on medals, world-ranking points and qualification slots for the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games.

The team begins departing this week for the various host nations.
