Uganda Premier League holders Vipers SC secured a priceless 1-0 away triumph against Namibian champions African Stars FC in the first leg of the CAF Champions League preliminary round, played at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town, South Africa.
Defender Hillary Mukundane settled the contest early, reacting sharply in the 14th minute to turn in Karim Watambala’s powerful, curling strike from distance.
The goal not only silenced the crowd but also handed the Venoms a valuable edge heading into next week’s return fixture.
The encounter was a cagey affair, with both sides reluctant to commit numbers forward. Vipers, however, enjoyed greater control of possession and looked more composed in key moments.
Mukundane was at the heart of it all, beyond his goal, he produced a match-saving block in the 65th minute to thwart Godwin Eiseb. His partner at the back, Kevin Dasylva Bady, also stood firm, snuffing out Emmanuel Kalala’s threat ten minutes earlier.
Vipers could have stretched their lead deep into stoppage time when substitute Yunus Sentamu broke free, but he failed to convert, dragging his shot wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.
Even so, the slim but vital win leaves Vipers in pole position ahead of the decisive second leg at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende next Saturday, where they will look to finish the job and book their place in the next round of Africa’s elite club competition.
