The Gunners came from behind after Newcastle’s club-record signing Nick Woltemade opened the scoring in the 34th minute.
Substitute Mikel Merino leveled the score in the 84th minute before Gabriel’s late intervention.
The tempestuous match saw an early Arsenal penalty overturned by VAR and was marred by a worrying injury to Newcastle defender Tino Livramento.
The win closes the gap on Premier League leaders Liverpool to two points.
