French tennis star Gael Monfils has announced he will retire at the end of the 2026 season, concluding a charismatic and athletic 21-year career.
The 39-year-old, who has won 13 career titles, including the Auckland Open earlier this year (making him the oldest ATP Tour champion at the time), described himself as “insanely, stupidly lucky” to have played during the sport’s “golden age” alongside Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, and Murray.
Monfils reached a career-high ranking of sixth in the world in 2016 and made two Grand Slam semi-final appearances (2008 French Open, 2016 US Open).
Despite recent struggles with injury, he noted he has “no regrets” and is looking forward to seeing the “exciting new generation” of players thrive.
