Following Tolbert Onyango’s departure from his role as head coach of the Uganda Men’s Rugby 7s national team, former captain Allan Otim has been appointed as the team’s caretaker.
Uganda Rugby Union (URU) revealed the appointment in a press document released on the morning of Thursday, October 2, 2025.
“In light of Coach Onyango’s departure, the Uganda Rugby Union is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Otim Allan as the Caretaker Head of the National Rugby Sevens Team,” URU President Godwin Arinaitwe Kayangwe said in the document.
Otim moves one step upwards from his role as Strength & Conditioning (S&C) Coach and will hold the position on an interim basis until an official permanent appointment is made.
In addition to being Onyango’s right hand man for about three years, Otim has, in the past, also had a chance at holding the reins of the national team. He steered a Uganda Sevens “Academy” side through the 2022 Safari 7s.
“Mr. Allan has worked closely with Coach Onyango over the years, and brings with him a deep understanding of the team’s dynamics and strategies. We are confident that under his guidance, the team will continue to build on this strong legacy and deliver outstanding performances,” Kayangwe said further in the document.
Otim steps into a big pair of shoes left behind by his former coach Onyango who won four Africa 7s titles and multiple other honours in his ten year stint.
Otim’s immediate task will be to prepare the national team for the 2025 Safari 7s which will be played next week from October 10-12 at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya.
