Coco Gauff continued her stellar run by defeating fellow American Jessica Pegula, 6-4, 7-5, to win the Wuhan Open.
The 21-year-old world number three secured her 11th career singles title and, in the process, became the first player to win her first nine hard court finals—a new record.
Gauff, the reigning French Open champion, had to fight back from a 3-0 deficit in the second set, claiming four straight games at the end to seal the victory in straight sets.
In her post-match speech, Gauff acknowledged defying her coach, Jean-Christophe Faurel, who initially advised her to skip the tournament after a tough US Open.
“I’m a very stubborn person, so maybe he said that on purpose for me to have a good result here,” Gauff said.
She also praised Pegula, who had gone to three sets in all eight of her previous Wuhan Open matches, saying she was “determined not to let you get there today.”
