Uganda Dominates Opening Day at Zone 3 Boxing Championships in Kenya

Uganda’s national boxing team made a strong start to the 2025 Zone 3 Boxing Championships in Kenya, winning nine of ten bouts on Monday, October 20.

The impressive performance marked a powerful statement of intent as the team began its quest for regional glory.

Muduwa Brenda set the tone for Uganda’s campaign with a gritty 3–2 split decision win over Nkelani Bawala Carine of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the women’s quarterfinals. The only blemish on the day came when Kato Kazibwe fell 5–0 to DRC’s Tsimba Mayala.

From there, Uganda’s boxers dominated across multiple weight divisions. KCCA’s Adriko Jimmy outclassed Kenya’s Ethan Maina 5–0 in the 60kg category, while Pastor Mukwaya Edward showed composure and control to defeat Kenya’s Joseph Shigali by the same score in the 67kg quarterfinals.

Ojok Alfred, known to fans as “Gorilla,” delivered a commanding 5–0 win over Rwanda’s Ndiyashimiye Patrick in the 75kg class, while Matovu Livingstone edged Kenya’s Kelvin Maina 3–2 in a tense 51kg bout. Team captain Murungi Kasim kept Uganda’s winning rhythm alive with a dominant 5–0 victory over Congo’s Badibanga Badianyama in the 57kg division.

There was also a clean 5–0 result for Farahat Manirola against Kenya’s Aluice Vicent in the 63.5kg category. Kanaabi Alex earned Uganda’s first stoppage of the day, forcing a Round 3 referee stoppage against Ethiopia’s Emvas Mesfin, before Aziz Ringo — the grandson of former president Idi Amin — wrapped up the session in style with a first-round RSC victory over Tanzania’s Emmanuel Agustino in the 92kg division.

The action continues today (Tuesday) with seven Ugandans set to return to the ring, including Adriko Jimmy, Ojok Alfred, and team captain Murungi Kasim. Uganda’s women will also be in action, with Katushabe Angel facing Nyembo Mujamba and Nakalema Emily meeting Lusamba Mbayto of DRC.
