Bukwo Town Council will host the inaugural Rebecca Cheptegei Memorial Run on November 22, an emotional tribute to the fallen marathoner who was killed in a domestic attack last year.
The event, themed “Race Against Gender-Based Violence,” will bring together athletes, families, and the wider community to both celebrate Cheptegei’s life and raise awareness on the urgent fight against gender-based violence.
Set to begin at 9:00 a.m., the run will feature a 10km elite race for men and women, a 4km fun race, and a 2km kids’ run.
Organizers say the event aims to turn Cheptegei’s legacy into a message of empowerment and justice for women across Uganda and beyond.
Cheptegei, a rising marathon star who represented Uganda internationally, was killed in Eldoret, Kenya, in September last year, just weeks after returning from the Paris 2024 Olympics where she had carried Uganda’s flag.
