FUFA Pilots Split League Format as New Third Division Season Gets Underway

The 2025/26 Kampala Region Third Division League kicked off in style on Sunday with a double-header at FUFA Stadium Kadiba, marking the start of a new season and the introduction of a split league format being piloted by FUFA.

Proline FC and Lufula SC set the tone in the opening fixture, playing out a 1–1 draw. Proline took the lead through Morris Okello before Jonathan Kinene leveled for Lufula midway through the second half. Despite both sides pressing for a late winner, the spoils were shared at the final whistle.

Under the floodlights in the evening clash, Mbogo FC made a strong start to their campaign with a 2–0 win over Kisugu United. Forward Hamuza Kasumba bagged a brace, scoring in the 35th and 78th minutes to secure all three points for his side.

Fans turned up in numbers to enjoy the action, with free entry and live coverage on FUFA TV and FUFA Radio helping boost the opening day’s atmosphere.

Matchday One action continues on Tuesday, November 4, with fixtures spread across seven venues. Edgars FC will face Police Young FC at Muteesa II Stadium, while Water FC host Mutongo FC at UICT Nakawa and Nsambya SC entertain Wembley Boys FC at Yes Center Nsambya, among others.

This season marks the first time FUFA is testing the split league format at regional level following its suspension in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.

The federation has injected over UGX 800 million into the competition, covering prize money, matchday bonuses, and operational costs. The eventual league champions are set to walk away with UGX 20 million.

The pilot project is seen as a key step in testing new competition structures that could shape the future of lower-tier football management in Uganda.
