Woodball Federation Expands Grassroots Reach with Fresh Batch of Certified Coaches

The Uganda Woodball Federation (UWBF) began its 2025/2026 season on a strong note with a Level I coaching course held at Makerere University Business School (MUBS) on Saturday.

The one-day program, led by International Woodball Federation instructor George Isabirye, attracted 22 participants from both Kampala Central Region and other parts of the country.

The session covered the fundamentals of woodball, including gameplay techniques and the scoring system in both Fairway and Stroke formats.

According to UWBF Secretary Adam Kato, the training aligns with the federation’s strategic plan to expand the sport’s reach through capacity building. “Our focus is empowering sports tutors and games teachers so we can introduce the sport to more young people. That’s why most of the participants are teachers,” Kato said.

He added that more coaching courses are planned across different regions before competitions begin, with all participants set to receive Level I certificates. A Level II course will later be organized to further develop coaching standards.

Participants expressed enthusiasm for the program, pledging to promote woodball in their schools and communities. Kasanda District sports officer Uthman Waswa, one of the trainees, said the experience opened his eyes to a new sport. “It’s a game I had never played. I came to gain knowledge and take it to my area since it’s now on the school calendar,” he said.

Mukono’s Monica Karungi praised the initiative, saying it reshaped her perception of the sport. “The course has been very good. I’ve learnt the rules and gained the confidence to promote it,” she said.

The next UWBF Level I coaching course will take place at Lira University on Friday as the federation continues to roll out similar workshops nationwide.
