Three in as Uganda Lady Rugby Cranes Eye Africa Women’s 7s Glory

Uganda is set to host the 2025 Rugby Africa Women’s 7s tournament, scheduled for November 15-16 in Nairobi.

A twelve-strong team of familiar and experienced names and faces has been named for the tournament at the RFUEA Grounds on Ngong Road this weekend.

Uganda’s Team for 2025 Rugby Africa Women’s 7s Tournament:

1. Grace Nabaggala
2. Yvonne Najjuma
3. Fazira Namukwaya
4. Suzan Adong
5. Sandra Amoli Lorna
6. Juliet Nandawula
7. Samiya Ayikoru
8. Peace Lekuru
9. Lydia Namabiro
10. Janat Nandudu
11. Unity Namulala
12. Agnes Nakuya (captain)

Technical Bench:

• Head Coach: Charles Onen
• S&C Coach: Kigongo Ssebalamu
• Team Manager: Winnie Atyang

From the team which last represented Uganda— at the Safari 7s in the same city exactly a month ago, three changes have been made.

Samiya Ayikoru, Peace Lekuru and Unity Namulala are like-for-like replacements of Tina Akello, Comfort Anganyika and Racheal Mufuwa.

Lekuru, the former captain, will make her first appearance in national team colours since going pro with York RLFC Valkyrie in the Rugby League in England.

Although Uganda have never won the Africa 7s title, hopes are high because of the team’s performance at the Safari 7s. The Lady Rugby Cranes were applauded for their defence as they clinched the silver medal.

The Lady Rugby Cranes are also the last national team in action in 2025 as Uganda searches for its first top-flight trophy this year.

However, they will have to contend with formidable challengers in hosts Kenya Lionesses and defending champions South Africa Women’s Boks.

Participating Countries in their Respective Pools:
• POOL A: South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mauritius.
• POOL B: Kenya, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire.
• POOL C: Uganda, Zambia, Burkina Faso.
• POOL D: Madagascar, Tunisia, Egypt.

To start the tournament, Uganda will face Zambia and Burkina Faso in the pools.

Stakes are higher in the grand scheme of things too. The winner of this tournament, bar Kenya who already booked their slot, will qualify for the 2026 World Rugby 7s Series.
