Uganda’s U17 national football team, the Cubs, have written a new chapter in the country’s sporting history, advancing to the knockout stages of the FIFA U17 World Cup after a hard-fought 1–0 victory over France in Doha.
Forward James Bogere, who has become the symbol of Uganda’s golden generation, delivered once again, scoring in the 18th minute after a clever pass from Hamza Ssengooba.
The goal, confirmed by VAR, sent the Ugandan fans at Aspire Zone into wild celebrations as the young side held firm to secure a famous win against one of world football’s powerhouses.
The result lifted Uganda to four points, enough to qualify among the best third-placed teams for the round of 32.
It capped a spirited group stage campaign that began with a narrow 2–1 loss to Canada, followed by a 1–1 draw with Chile.
Bogere also scored Uganda’s first-ever World Cup goal in that opening match, adding to his tally from April’s playoff against The Gambia, where his brace had sealed qualification to Qatar.
Head coach Brian Ssenyondo’s team showed remarkable composure and tactical discipline against France, leading 1–0 at halftime and resisting waves of pressure in the second half.
Goalkeeper Edrisah Waibi and his backline were central to the clean sheet that ensured the team’s progression.
Elsewhere in Group K, Chile defeated Canada 2–1, but the result wasn’t enough for the former to progress to the next round.
All teams in the group finished at four points, with goal difference and head-to-head deciding the standings.
France topped the group with a +1 goal difference, Canada finished second, with a better head-to-head record than Uganda.
However, the Cub’s balanced record of four points and zero goal difference saw them edge Chile (goal difference -1) to progress through to the next round.
