Finally Her Time, Akello’s Long Overdue Rise

For years, Hope Akello has dominated Ugandan women’s basketball.

Now, the nation’s most decorated player of her generation is taking her talents abroad.

On Thursday, 13th November, Moroccan side Majd Tanja officially announced the signing of the 2023, 2024, and 2019 National Basketball League (NBL) MVP via their Instagram page.

Akello’s rise in Ugandan basketball has been nothing short of spectacular.

Over the past six years, she has transformed from a promising talent into arguably the best female basketball player of her generation in the country.

With three MVP awards under her belt, multiple championship runs, and a growing reputation as a leader on and off the court, her move to Morocco seems like the natural next step in a career that has been building toward international recognition.

Her dominance is clear from the statistics. In the 2025 NBL season, Akello’s performance in the playoffs earned her the MVP award once again.

She led all players in points and rebounds, ranked in the top five in assists and steals, and posted the highest efficiency rating of the season.

Her averages, 15.3 points, 12 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 2.2 steals per game, demonstrate a player capable of impacting every aspect of the game.

In previous seasons, she has been equally impressive. In 2024, she guided her team to the championship while averaging 11.9 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 2.5 steals.

In 2023, she recorded 12.4 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game, cementing her reputation as a versatile and relentless force on the court.

Beyond her individual brilliance, Akello has also evolved into a respected leader.

Appointed co-captain of the Senior Ladies National team, the Gazelles, in 2025, she has consistently demonstrated her ability to inspire and elevate her teammates.

Her influence stretches beyond the stat sheet, embodying professionalism, work ethic, and dedication.

Akello is now following in the footsteps of Rose Akon, who moved to a Moroccan club after leading UCU Lady Canons to a championship in 2022.

But for Akello, this is not just a continuation of a pattern, it’s a leap forward for a player whose talent and accomplishments have long demanded broader recognition.

Rumors of interest from Dubai clubs and other international sides only deepen the high regard in which she is held across the basketball circles in Uganda.

For the Ugandan basketball fraternity, this is both a moment of pride and anticipation.

Akello’s move abroad isn’t just a personal milestone, it’s a statement that Ugandan women’s basketball can produce world-class talent capable of competing on international stages.

If her track record is any indication, Hope Akello’s arrival in Morocco will not go unnoticed.

She has spent years building her legacy, and now, it seems, the rest of the world is finally catching up.
