Formula 1 design legend Adrian Newey will become Aston Martin’s Team Principal for the 2026 season, marking a significant leadership restructuring.
The move sees Andy Cowell removed from his role as Team Principal and CEO after just 13 months, shifting to Chief Strategy Officer where he will focus on the team’s new Honda engine partnership.
Newey, who joined Aston Martin earlier this year on a lucrative five-year deal after leaving Red Bull, takes the top role to formalise his authority.
Insiders report the change follows disagreements between Newey and Cowell over team operations and the design of the 2026 car.
Team owner Lawrence Stroll called it a “mutual decision” that allows Newey to “make full use of his creative and technical expertise,” leveraging his history of winning 12 drivers’ and 13 constructors’ championships.
The team has denied speculation that former Red Bull boss Christian Horner will join Aston Martin, despite reports Newey gave him a factory tour this week.
