George Wagoogo has taken office as the new president of the Association of Uganda University Sports with a clear focus on the upcoming twentieth AUUS Games that will run from 18 to 23 December in Mukono.
He received the instruments of power from outgoing president Peninah Kabenge and said the December championship will act as the first measure of his administration.
Wagoogo said he wants to deliver a well organised and impactful event while pushing for wider sports participation across universities.
He said the December Games will guide his broader plan to strengthen competitions and bring more students into structured sport.
Kabenge used her handover remarks to reflect on her tenure, pointing to athlete development as the core of her legacy.
She noted that the period in which she served saw the emergence of several major performers. She highlighted Joshua Cheptegei, now a World Athletics champion, who was identified during his time at Bugema University.
She also pointed to the She Cranes squad that won the 2025 Celtic Cup in Glasgow as an example of the talent nurtured under her leadership.
Kabenge said these achievements show what intentional development and strong administration can deliver.
Stakeholders within university sport believe Wagoogo can build on that foundation.
They expect his term to include work on establishing a permanent home for the association and pushing Ugandan university sport to a higher competitive level.
