Kenya dominated the golf event at the East African Inter Parliamentary Games after Kanini Kega sealed the overall title with 78 points, edging a tight leaderboard at Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort.
Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa finished one point behind on 77, tied with Edwin Gichuki and Hon Mugambi, who took the next two positions on countback. John Chege claimed the gross award with a total of 161.
In the ladies category, Uganda’s Sylvia Nayebale topped the field with 81 points to secure the overall title. Mary Maingi finished second on 67, ahead of Judith Alyek on 64 and Kenya’s Esther Passaris on 54.
The individual skill awards went to Okullo Anthony for nearest to the pin in the men’s category, while Esther Passaris won the same award among the ladies. Kanini Kenga produced the longest drive for the men, and Mary Maingi took the longest drive title for the ladies.
Kenya also won the men’s team event with a combined 301 points, powered by strong rounds from Gichuki with 77, Mugambi Mwirithania with 77, Edward Muriu with 74, and John Methu with 73. Uganda followed with 260 points, led by Tayebwa on 77 and supported by Okin Ojara, Anthony Okullo, and Gilbert Olanya.
EALA finished next with 78 points through Kanini Kega, while South Sudan and Rwanda closed the standings with 54 and 53 points respectively.
Uganda took the ladies team title with 198 points, boosted by Nayebale’s 81, Alyek’s 64, and Caroline Kamusiime’s 53. Kenya placed second with 167, ahead of Rwanda on 45.
The golf event now stands as one of the most competitive outings at this year’s Games, highlighting the growing strength of the sport across the region.
