Former Bafana Bafana striker Shaun Bartlett believes the national team can make history at the upcoming Afcon in Morocco, ending a trophy drought that dates back to 1996.
With the 30th anniversary of South Africa’s only Afcon title approaching next year, Bartlett says the current squad under Hugo Broos has the “stronger mindset” needed to improve on their recent third-place finish and claim the trophy.
Bartlett suggests that set-piece variations could be Bafana’s secret weapon to surprise opponents and break down stubborn defenses.
He credits Broos for building a resilient team that understands the pressure of tournament knockout stages.
Bafana Bafana open their Group B campaign against Angola on December 22, sharing a group with Egypt and Zimbabwe.
“We have a perfect opportunity to rewrite history,” Bartlett said. “The players now know exactly what it takes to get to the final hurdle.”
