Wilfred Ndidi has been officially appointed captain of the Nigeria national team, ushering in a new era for the Super Eagles as they arrive in Morocco for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The 28-year-old midfielder succeeds William Troost-Ekong, who retired from international football on December 4.
Ndidi, who recently joined Turkish side Besiktas after eight years at Leicester City, was the natural choice for head coach Eric Chelle.
With 71 caps since his debut in 2015, he is now the most experienced leader in the squad.
Ndidi previously wore the armband during last month’s narrow World Cup playoff loss to DR Congo.
His primary mission now is to lead Nigeria one step further than their 2023 runner-up finish and secure the nation’s fourth AFCON title.
