Uganda Fall to Nigeria After Red Card Swing in AFCON Group Finale

Uganda’s AFCON 2025 group stage campaign ended with a 3-1 defeat to Nigeria in Fez on Tuesday, a result shaped by a second half red card that tilted the contest decisively against the Cranes.

Uganda started with intent and created the first clear opening on 13 minutes when Rogers Mato met a cross but headed just wide.

The Cranes were competitive through much of the first half, pressing Nigeria and limiting clear chances, before conceding on 28 minutes when Paul Onuachu finished into an open net after Denis Onyango had rushed off his line.

The turning point came early in the second half. Goalkeeper Salim Magoola was shown a straight red card in the 57th minute for handling outside his area as Victor Osimhen attempted to lift the ball over him. Reduced to ten men, Uganda struggled to contain the pressure that followed.

Raphael Onyedika struck twice in quick succession, scoring in the 63rd and 67th minutes, as Nigeria took control against a Cranes side forced to rely on third choice goalkeeper Nafian Alionzi.

Uganda continued to push and were rewarded in the 75th minute when Allan Okello released Mato through on goal. Mato produced a composed finish over Francis Uzoho to give the Cranes a consolation goal and underline their attacking threat despite the numerical disadvantage.

The result leaves Uganda eliminated at the group stage, but their performance showed moments of control and attacking quality, particularly before the red card. Nigeria progress as group winners, while the Cranes turn attention to rebuilding ahead of future continental campaigns.
