Ugandan kickboxing star Moses Golola will headline the Battle of the Year against Gen Fungu on New Year’s Day at Akamwesi, Kyebando, as he continues an active run in the ring following his latest victory.
The bout comes days after Golola recorded a knockout win over Mike Okiror at Bukedea Comprehensive Stadium, a result that underlined his continued presence at the top of Uganda’s kickboxing scene. He now turns his attention to Kyebando, where organisers expect a large turnout for the New Year showdown.
Speaking ahead of the fight, Golola said the event carries a broader purpose beyond competition. He described it as a platform to showcase Uganda’s culture and kingdoms while pushing for wider sports development across the country.
Golola said his focus is on taking professional kickboxing beyond major cities so that fans in grassroots communities can access high-level fights.
He also used the occasion to call for greater government investment in sports, pointing to regions such as Sebei as examples of how structured support can change lives through athletics.
“I call upon Members of Parliament who are seeking votes to return to Parliament and prioritize increased funding for sports as a major investment. There is a lot of untapped talent across different regions that needs to be identified and developed, just as athletics has become a viable career in the Sebei sub-region,” said Golola.
