Tottenham Hotspur are set to beat Aston Villa to the signing of Conor Gallagher in a £35m deal from Atletico Madrid.
While Villa had pursued a loan-to-buy arrangement, Spurs moved into pole position by meeting Atletico’s valuation.
The 25-year-old midfielder is keen to finalize the move before Tuesday’s Copa del Rey fixture to boost his chances of making Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for this summer’s World Cup.
Spurs turned to the former Chelsea man following a long-term hamstring injury to Rodrigo Bentancur, who requires surgery after a recent defeat at Bournemouth.
Personal terms are expected to be a formality as Gallagher prepares for a return to the Premier League.
