George Russell has thrown down the gauntlet to Max Verstappen, declaring his intent to challenge for the 2026 World Championship following the launch of the Mercedes-AMG F1 W17 E-PERFORMANCE.
As F1 enters its most radical era of technical change, featuring active aero and a 50/50 hybrid power split, Russell expressed confidence after a successful Barcelona shakedown.
“I do want to go head-to-head with Max,” the 27-year-old said. “I’d love for it to turn out that way.”
The W17 is smaller, lighter, and designed to thrive under the 2026 regulations.
Toto Wolff dismissed “loophole” allegations from Ferrari and Audi regarding engine compression ratios, telling rivals to “get your s*** together” and focus on their own performance.
Russell is joined by 19-year-old Kimi Antonelli for a second season, while Frederik Vesti moves into the reserve role.
Despite Mercedes being labeled pre-season favorites, team boss Toto Wolff remains cautious, noting that the true pace of Red Bull’s new in-house Ford engine and McLaren’s title defense remains a mystery.
