Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has apologized for claiming the UK has been “colonised by immigrants,” following a wave of political and sporting backlash.
In a Sky News interview, the 73-year-old billionaire linked economic issues to migration and welfare, incorrectly claiming the UK population grew by 12 million in five years (the actual figure is roughly 2.7 million).
The UK Prime Minister called the remarks “offensive and wrong,” while the club distanced itself, stating it “prides itself on being inclusive” and reflects Manchester’s diverse heritage.
Kick It Out described the language as “disgraceful and deeply divisive.”
On Thursday, Ratcliffe stated: “I am sorry that my choice of language has offended some people… but it is important to raise the issue of controlled and well-managed immigration.”
The Football Association (FA) is reportedly investigating whether the comments brought the game into disrepute under Rule E3.
