Kenya’s Brigid Kosgei reclaimed her Tokyo Marathon title in historic fashion, clocking a blistering 2:14:29 to set a new course record.
The 32-year-old finished over two minutes ahead of Ethiopia’s Bertukan Welde (2:16:36) and Hawi Feysa (2:17:39).
Following her win, the Olympic silver medalist confirmed plans to represent Turkey at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, citing a desire to lead a new generation of athletes.
In contrast to Kosgei’s solo dominance, the men’s race came down to the wire.
Tthiopia’s Tadese Takele successfully defended his title with a time of 2:03:37, narrowly out-sprinting Kenyans Geoffrey Toroitich (same time) and Alexander Mutiso Munyao, who finished just one second behind.
“Around 41km I wanted to wait and see… then I made my move right before the finish,” said the 23-year-old Takele.
