Jean-Guy Blaise Mayolas, the president of the Congolese Football Federation (FECOFOOT), was sentenced to life in prison on Tuesday.
The conviction follows a high-profile corruption case involving the misappropriation of funds originally intended for the development of women’s football and COVID-19 relief.
A criminal court in Brazzaville found Mayolas guilty of multiple charges, including money laundering, embezzlement, and forgery.
The prosecution successfully argued that Mayolas orchestrated a scheme to divert approximately $1.3 million in FIFA-allocated funds.
Central to the case was a $500,000 grant from FIFA’s COVID-19 relief program. While the funds were earmarked to support women’s football initiatives during the pandemic and improve infrastructure, investigators revealed the money was instead siphoned off through a network of fraudulent transactions and falsified records for personal gain.
The verdict was delivered in a dramatic fashion, as Mayolas did not appear in court and was sentenced in absentia.
His current whereabouts remain unknown, and he is officially considered a fugitive.
The legal hammer fell not only on the president but also on his inner circle. The court also handed life sentences to Mayolas’ wife and son, who were found to be complicit in the corruption scheme.
FECOFOOT General Secretary Badji Mombo Wantete and Treasurer Raoul Kanda were each sentenced to five years in prison for their roles in the financial irregularities.
“This ruling is one of the most significant legal actions ever taken against a football administrator in the country,” stated a representative for the prosecution. “It sends a clear message that the era of impunity in sports governance is over.”
