Thirteen-time Uganda Premier League champions KCCA FC will be without five key players when they host traditional rivals Express FC in a fierce Kampala derby at the MTN Omondi Stadium on Wednesday.
The Kasasiro Boys head into the highly anticipated encounter eager to collect maximum points and maintain pressure on league leaders Vipers SC as the title race intensifies.
However, co-head coach Brian Ssenyondo will have to navigate the derby with a depleted squad. Bright Anukani (knee), James Mubezi (fracture), Alpha Thierry Ssali (hamstring) and Derrick Nsibambi (knee) are all sidelined through injury, while goalkeeper and captain Charles Lukwago is unavailable after being granted compassionate leave.
Despite the setbacks, KCCA arrive in strong form having won their last three matches, a run that has reignited belief in their title credentials. Their most recent outing saw them grind out a 2-1 victory over Police FC, keeping them firmly in the hunt as the season enters a decisive stretch.
Express, under the joint stewardship of Jackson Magera and Brian Ssenyondo, also arrive with renewed confidence after frustrating SC Villa in a goalless stalemate at the FUFA Technical Centre.
Although wins have been difficult to come by for the Red Eagles, they have shown resilience of late and are unbeaten in their last five league matches, drawing all of them.
KCCA will likely start as favourites, particularly after winning the first meeting between the two sides earlier this season.
Nevertheless, derby encounters between the two clubs rarely follow form.
Express still possess attacking threats capable of deciding the contest. Marvin Nyanzi and Kenneth Kimera remain key players in the Red Eagles’ forward line, while former KCCA midfield prospect Gift Ali could be handed a debut against his former club, adding further intrigue to the clash.
Historically, the Lugogo venue has not always been kind to KCCA when Express visit. The Red Eagles have won their last two matches at the stadium and have lost just once in their previous five trips there.
