Laryea Kingston said he was encouraged by the attitude and sharpness of his players after the Uganda national under-17 football team held their first training session as preparations began for the 2026 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations.
The opening session took place at the FUFA Technical Centre Njeru, where the technical team kept the programme light as the provisional squad reported to camp.
Kingston said the early signs were positive, although the session was intentionally kept at a low intensity to help the players ease into the training schedule.
“This is the first training and the impressions have been very good. We started on a very low note because we need to get the muscles going. I think the boys are looking a bit sharp,” Kingston said.
He explained that the first day in camp can be demanding for players who are adjusting to the workload, but noted that the intensity gradually improved as the session progressed.
“Of course, the first training is sometimes a bit difficult for them. We started the training very slow but with time it picked up a little bit. It’s the first training so we will build up from it,” he added.
Kingston also revealed that the camp is yet to reach full attendance, with several players still expected to join in the coming days.
“We are still expecting some players to join so that we have a full house and then the education will start. This week will be more about activating the muscles so that the boys get going. Proper education will start next week,” he explained.
Despite the gradual start, the coach believes the team is moving in the right direction as preparations for the continental tournament gather pace.
“It looks good so far and we are looking forward to having good days ahead,” Kingston concluded.
