NEC host Lugazi this afternoon in the Stanbic Uganda Cup Round of 16 tie at MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, aiming to extend their strong run and secure a place in the quarter-finals.
The two sides meet for the third time this season, with NEC having already completed a league double over Lugazi.
They won 1-0 at home in January before following it up with a 2-0 away victory on March 6, and now target a third straight win against the same opponent across competitions.
NEC come into the tie in consistent form, unbeaten in 13 matches since December.
Their run has been built on defensive solidity, with 10 clean sheets recorded, alongside a steady attacking return of 17 goals. The home side also carry added motivation from their run to the final in 2024, where they finished as runners-up.
There is a boost in team news with Joseph Seremba returning to contention after recovering from a right ankle sprain, while Hudson Mbalire is also back after overcoming a foot injury. However, Jacob Okao, Joseph Dhata, Emmanuel Ajo and Pius Obuya remain unavailable.
Lugazi arrive as underdogs but with momentum of their own after eliminating Police 2-1 in the previous round, thanks to a brace from Umar Kyebatala.
Coached by Simon Peter Mugerwa, they are expected to adopt a compact approach and rely on counter-attacks in what is a one-off knockout fixture.
Historically, NEC hold the advantage in this fixture, with four wins from six meetings since their early encounters in the FUFA Big League. They have also taken all six league points from Lugazi this season.
NEC enter the 3 PM tie as favourites on form and head-to-head record, but the nature of knockout football leaves little margin for error, with Lugazi capable of capitalising if given opportunities.
