The National Basketball League continues tonight, Friday, March 27, at the Lugogo Indoor Arena, with a thrilling double-header that promises high-level action in both the women’s and men’s divisions, with both fixtures live on NBS Sport.
The headline showdown comes in the women’s league at 7pm, where unbeaten UCU Lady Canons put their perfect start on the line against table leaders JT Lady Jaguars in what is expected to be a mouthwatering clash.
UCU Lady Canons enter the clash brimming with confidence after extending their unbeaten run to eight games with a 66-55 victory over UPDF Lady Tomahawks on Wednesday at Lugogo.
That result underlined their resilience and balance, recovering from a slow start to take firm control of the game and ultimately seal another convincing win.
Martinah Anyango led a well-distributed scoring effort with 12 points, while Zoe Atek and Christine Saima added 10 and 11 points respectively, with Atek also registering seven assists in an impressive all-round display.
The Mukono-based side has been dominant this season, dispatching opponents with authority, and their sustained success continues to be rooted in their ability to rebuild and remain competitive despite regular roster changes.
Over the years, UCU, who are the record women’s champions with eight titles, have consistently blended emerging university talent with smart recruitment, a system that has kept them among the elite.
That structure has once again been evident this season. Following the departure of key players including Bridget Aber, who crossed to JT Lady Jaguars, UCU reinforced with Patricia Faith Aseru from Angels, Mariam Namukwaya from Miracle Eaglets, and Nakibuuka Doreen from Magic Stormers.
The trio has seamlessly integrated with established figures such as Shillah Lamunu, Sylvia Nakituuka, and Martinah Anyango, ensuring continuity in performance.
Under the guidance of head coach Nick Natuhereza and his assistant Emmanuel Kiguyi, UCU’s ability to nurture and integrate talent has remained unmatched, and it is a key reason why they are widely tipped as favourites to secure a record-extending ninth league title, having previously lifted the crown in 2008, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2022.
However, standing in their way is a familiar and formidable opponent in JT Lady Jaguars, a side heavily built on former UCU personnel.
Often referred to as UCU’s “big sisters,” the Jaguars’ roster is dominated by players who have either passed through or developed at UCU, making this fixture as personal as it is competitive.
In recent seasons, JT Lady Jaguars have aggressively recruited from UCU, a strategy that has almost paid dividends.
After finishing as semi-finalists in 2024, they acquired Shakirah Nanvubya and Aziida Lubega Nabayunga, additions that propelled them to the 2025 finals, where they narrowly lost to eventual champions JKL Lady Dolphins.
This season, they further strengthened their ranks with the acquisition of Bridget Aber, who has since registered 20 points and 23 rebounds in her four games played.
Their squad depth is further bolstered by experienced names such as Annet Among, Maimuna Nabbosa, Rhoda Nagitta, Brenda Kayaga, and Sarah Ageno, reinforcing the strong UCU connection that defines the team.
Despite that shared history, the Jaguars have been equally impressive on the court this season. They sit top of the standings with eight wins in nine games, their only defeat coming against defending champions JKL Lady Dolphins.
Coach Sudi Ulanga’s side will be eager to hand UCU their first loss of the campaign and tighten their grip at the summit.
Statistically, the Jaguars boast a balanced attack led by Brenda Kayaga, who has scored a team-high 83 points (9.2 points per game), closely followed by Sarah Ageno with 81 points (9.0 ppg) and Mary Priscillar Nambogo with 80 (8.9 ppg).
Rhoda Nagitta and Shakirah Nanvubya have combined for a team-high 33 assists, while Marccy Batamuliza has been dominant on the boards with 114 rebounds (12.7 rpg).
UCU, currently second on the log, will rely on Martinah Anyango, who leads their scoring with 100 points (12.5 ppg) and also tops their rebounding charts with 76 boards (9.6 rpg).
Zoe Atek (25 assists, 3.1 apg) and Shillah Lamunu (20 assists, 2.9 apg) continue to orchestrate play in the backcourt, and will also be very important tonight.
Last season, the two sides shared victories in tightly contested, low-scoring encounters, with JT claiming a 57–52 win in April before UCU responded with a 71–62 triumph in June, highlighting the defensive intensity and rivalry that could once again define tonight’s showdown.
Meanwhile, later at 9pm, unbeaten and 10-time champions City Oilers will seek to maintain their flawless run this season when they take on the UCU Canons in the men’s contest.
The Oilers have won all six of their opening games and appear firmly on course to mount a title charge after falling short last season.
They face a UCU Canons side that has shown flashes of brilliance but, unlike its female counterparts, has struggled for consistency, posting four wins and three losses so far.
Despite their mixed start, the Canons head into the contest with confidence following an emphatic 81-52 victory over JKL Dolphins, one of their most complete performances of the campaign.
With both two unbeaten runs on the line, tonight’s double-header at Lugogo promises intensity, storylines, and a potential early statement in the race for this season’s National Basketball League titles.
