Carlos Alcaraz has pulled out of the Barcelona Open after suffering a right‑wrist injury in his opening match.
The 22‑year‑old Spaniard, who beat Otto Virtanen in straight sets on Tuesday, said he felt his wrist “give out” during the contest. Medical tests confirmed the problem was more serious than expected.
Alcaraz, twice champion in Barcelona, had been due to face Tomas Machac but will now return home for treatment. His absence hands Jannik Sinner further momentum after reclaiming the world number one ranking.
The Spaniard faces a race to be fit for the French Open, which begins on 18 May, where he hopes to defend his title for a third consecutive year.
