The 2026 Uganda Women’s Rugby Premiership season will be decided in one final showdown as Thunderbirds and Nile Rapids prepare for a winner-takes-all clash at Kyadondo this weekend.
After months of competition, the two sides head into the final round level on points with only points difference separating them.
Nile Rapids climbed to the top of the standings after a dominant 69-00 victory over Ewes on Matchday 11, while Thunderbirds stayed within touching distance after edging She Wolves 15-10.
Now, the title race comes down to a direct contest between Uganda’s most established women’s rugby side and the emerging force seeking to reshape the local game.
Thunderbirds carry the weight of history into the fixture. Widely regarded as the pioneers of women’s rugby in Uganda, the Kyadondo-based side dominated the domestic scene before the Covid-19 disruption and built a reputation around resilience and consistency. Victory this weekend would see them claim a fifth Premiership title and become the most decorated club in the competition’s history.
Standing in their way is a Nile Rapids side that has rapidly established itself as one of the country’s strongest rugby projects despite only being in its fourth year. The Jinja-based outfit has already collected two Uganda Cup titles and is now within touching distance of a first-ever Premiership crown.
Their credentials were underlined at the start of the season when they stunned Thunderbirds 22-13 in the opening meeting between the two sides. Since then, Nile Rapids have steadily built momentum and now enter the decider with the psychological advantage of already beating their title rivals once this campaign.
The final also represents a broader battle between experience and emergence. Thunderbirds are fighting to extend a legacy built over years at the top of Ugandan women’s rugby, while Nile Rapids are chasing a breakthrough moment that would signal a changing of the guard.
By coincidence, the season has produced the perfect finale. The current Uganda Cup holders and the reigning 7s series champions will now face each other with the biggest domestic prize on the line.
Everything that has happened across the 2026 campaign now points to Kyadondo, where one club will leave as champions and the other will be left wondering how close they came.
