Preview: Co-Hosts USA Chase Another World Cup Statement Victory Against Australia

FIFA World Cup co-hosts USA and Australia meet in Seattle tonight at 10 pm, with both sides carrying the confidence of impressive opening-day victories, but with the stakes now even higher as the winner could move into pole position in Group D.

The Americans announced their tournament ambitions with a commanding 4-1 victory over Paraguay in their opener, producing an attacking display that saw them score four goals in a single World Cup match for the first time in their history.

The result matched their biggest-ever winning margin at the tournament and ended a long wait for a dominant performance on football’s biggest stage.

Now, USA have the opportunity to achieve something they have not managed for more than two decades: winning consecutive World Cup matches.

Their last back-to-back victories came during the 2002 tournament, when they reached the quarter-finals, and another triumph here would also mark the first time they have recorded multiple wins in one edition since that memorable campaign.

Seattle has become a fortress for the hosts, with the Americans winning seven consecutive matches in the city.

That record, combined with the momentum from their opening victory, will make them confident heading into a meeting against an Australia side that also produced one of the biggest surprises of matchday one.

The Socceroos stunned Turkey with a 2-0 victory, securing their first opening-match win at a World Cup since 2006.

Despite entering the tournament with mixed recent form, Australia produced a disciplined display, with bold team selection decisions, including starting third-choice goalkeeper Patrick Beach, paying off.

That result extended Australia’s impressive World Cup record, with three wins from their last four matches at the finals.

However, they know the importance of avoiding complacency after assistant coach Hayden Foxe warned against repeating Saudi Arabia’s failure to capitalise on their famous 2022 victory over Argentina.

The two nations have never met at the World Cup, although USA won their last two friendly meetings, including their most recent clash in October 2025.

Folarin Balogun will yet again be the player to watch for the hosts after scoring twice against Paraguay and moving closer to becoming the first American since Bert Patenaude in 1930 to score four goals in a single World Cup.

Australia’s teenage winger Nestory Irankunda, meanwhile, is aiming to become the first player under 21 since Memphis Depay in 2014 to score in his first two World Cup appearances.

USA could be without captain Christian Pulisic after he left the Paraguay match with a calf problem, while Australia are monitoring striker Mohamed Touré.

With both teams already showing their quality, Seattle could host one of the most entertaining matches of the group stage.
