Co-hosts Bukedea Comprehensive School made a strong start to the 2024 Federation of East African Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) Games with 2-0 victory against Tanzania’s Benjamin Mkapa Secondary School in the tournament’s opening match on Sunday, August 18.
The game, played at Bukedea Comprehensive Stadium, saw Reagan Ssekisambu and Yusuf Ssebumpenje strike in the first half to seal the win for the co-hosts.
The match began with Bukedea on the offensive, and it didn’t take long for the home side to break the deadlock.
In the 7th minute, Reagan Ssekisambu tapped in from close range after a precise cross from Karim Ssengozi.
The early goal energised the crowd and set the tone for Bukedea’s dominance in the first half.
As the game progressed, Bukedea continued to press, and their efforts were rewarded with a second goal.
This time, it was Yusuf Ssebumpenje who found the back of the net, capitalising on a well-executed combination play with Ssekisambu to split the Benjamin Mkapa defense.
The goal, which came just before halftime, put Bukedea in a commanding position as they went into the break leading 2-0.
In the second half, Bukedea maintained their composure, and their defense held firm against any attempts by the Tanzanian side to stage a comeback.
The victory places Bukedea Comprehensive School at the top of Group A with 3 points and a +2 goal difference.
President Yoweri Museveni had earlier officially launched the Games that will be co-hosted by Bukedea Comprehensive School and Amus College.
Football action continues today with another Group A clash between defending champions St. Mary’s Kitende and Kenya’s Highway Secondary School at 11 am.
The day will also see two Group B matches in the afternoon, including co-hosts Amus College taking on Kenya’s Musingu High School, and APE Rugunga of Rwanda facing Tanzania’s Kalangalala Secondary School.
The Games, which run until August 27, will feature not only football but also rugby (7’s and 15’s), basketball (3×3 and 5×5), handball, netball, athletics, swimming, hockey, volleyball, goalball, tennis, badminton, and table tennis.
This year’s edition will bring together top secondary schools and also primary schools from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi.
