UCU Doves secured a 3-1 victory against Nemostars in a thrilling National Volleyball League clash at Lugogo Arena on Wednesday evening.
This marks Nemostars’ first defeat of the season after a strong start with wins over KCCA and KAVC.
Despite Nemostars taking the first set 25-18, UCU fought back to claim the next three sets (25-18, 25-22, 25-23) and their second win of the season.
The Doves had started their campaign with a loss to Elyon but quickly recovered with a victory over Ndejje Sharks.
Nemostars, known for their resilience, struggled to maintain momentum after their initial success, as UCU capitalised on errors, particularly in service.
UCU’s Mark Omara played a pivotal role, helping the Doves dominate the second set with a commanding six-point lead (19-13) before sealing it 25-18.
Nemostars made efforts to recover in the third set, with George Aporu returning to bolster their reception.
However, a controversial overreaching call handed UCU the set, and they edged Nemostars in a tightly contested fourth set, winning 25-23.
Aporu acknowledged the team’s shortcomings, citing anxiety and a lack of focus.
“We started well, but UCU gained momentum and punished us. We struggled with unforced errors, but the season is still young, and we will bounce back,” he said.
With this win, UCU now sit third on the National Volleyball League Men’s Serie A standings with six points from three games, while Nemostars dropped to fourth with five points.
Sport-S and Elyon occupy the top two spots, both unbeaten with 9 and 6 points respectively.
