NEC have reclaimed their top position on the Uganda Premier League (UPL) standings after a commanding 2-0 victory against Wakiso Giants at MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, on Saturday.
The win reasserted NEC’s place in first after temporarily dropping to third following wins by rivals Vipers and KCCA earlier in the weekend.
Vipers had initially overtaken NEC on Friday with a 2-1 victory over Police at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.
KCCA then pushed NEC down further with a narrow 1-0 win over newly-promoted Mbale Heroes on Saturday.
But NEC, determined to regain their lead, delivered a confident display, scoring two second-half goals to secure all three points.
Muzamiru Mutyaba opened the scoring for NEC in the 54th minute, and James Jarieko solidified the victory in the 87th, lifting NEC’s tally to 15 points from six games.
Wakiso Giants, meanwhile, are now positioned 11th with seven points.
NEC’s next fixture will take them to Najjembe to face newly-promoted Lugazi on October 30.
Wakiso Giants will look to regroup as they prepare to host Express at Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium on October 31.
With all 16 teams now six games into the season, the competition is heating up as NEC, KCCA, and Vipers continue to battle for supremacy at the top of the league.
