Ugandan goalkeeper Denis Onyango and his team, Mamelodi Sundowns, have learned their group stage opponents for the revamped FIFA Club World Cup.
Sundowns have been drawn in Group F, where they will face German Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund, Brazilian side Fluminense, and South Korea’s Ulsan Hyundai.
The tournament will be Onyango’s second appearance at the Club World Cup with Sundowns, following their debut in 2016 after winning their first-ever CAF Champions League title.
Notably, Sundowns were the first team from Southern Africa to play at the competition, which was then held in Japan.
The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup introduces a new 32-team format and will be held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 15 to July 13, serving as a test for the 12 venues selected for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Previously held annually with seven teams, the Club World Cup will now take place every four years, making this edition historic.
Other African powerhouses joining the tournament include CAF Champions League holders Al Ahly (Egypt), Esperance Sportive de Tunis (Tunisia), and Wydad Casablanca (Morocco).
Al Ahly are in Group A alongside Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami, Palmeiras, and FC Porto.
Esperance face Chelsea in Group D, along with Flamengo and Club León.
Wydad find themselves in Group G with Manchester City, Juventus, and Al Ain.
