Jorge Campillo Wins 2023 Magical Kenya Open

Spain’s Jorge Campillo carded a final-round 66 to claim a two-shot victory in the DP World Tour’s Magical Kenya Open at the Muthaiga Golf Club in Nairobi.

Campillo, 36, secured a third title on the Tour, and his first since 2020, as he sank six birdies in his final round for a tournament total of 18-under-par, two ahead of runner-up Masahiro Kawamura, from Japan, who also carded a 66.

Campillo had begun his third round five shots off the lead but produced a superb 63 on Saturday which contained eight birdies, giving him a one-shot overnight lead going into the final round.

He cemented his position at the top of the leader board with four birdies on the front nine and held off the challenge of Japan’s Kawamura, with Spain’s Santiago Tarrio (66) and Japan’s Ryo Hisatsune (65) sharing third place at 15-under-par.

That earned him $340,000 in prize money, a lion’s share of the $2m total kitty. Kenya’s young professional Muthai Kibugu, the best placed East African finished joint 65th with six other golfers to take home $ 48,000 each.

Ronald Rugumayo, Uganda’s lone professional golfer, played only two rounds with 76 and 75 scores, failing to make the cut after 36 holes.  He left with his head held high after recording the tournament’s sole ace (hole-in-one) on day one. Kenya Airlines rewarded him with two round-trip tickets to any destination of his choice.
