Uganda’s Gazelles came agonizingly close to upsetting hosts Egypt in the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Zone V Qualifiers but ultimately fell 65-62 in a tense encounter at Hassan Moustafa Hall in Cairo last evening.
The game was a battle of resilience, with Uganda overcoming a slow start to challenge the home side until the final moments.
Egypt took early control, racing to a 23-14 lead after the first quarter, capitalising on their aggressive defense and efficient shooting.
But the Gazelles, led by captain Jane Asinde and standout performer Paige Robinson, clawed their way back into contention.
A dominant second quarter saw Uganda outscore Egypt 18-10, closing the gap to just one point (33-32) at halftime.
However, turnovers and missed free throws proved costly in the third quarter as the Pharaohs regained control, extending their lead to 46-41 heading into the final stretch.
Uganda made a late push, with Hope Akello and Asinde combining to tie the game at 50 before Asinde gave the Gazelles their first lead at 51-50.
The back-and-forth continued, with Uganda briefly holding a 55-54 advantage. But crucial baskets from Hala Elshaarawy and Farida Abdelnabi, along with Egypt’s ability to capitalise on late free throws, sealed the win for the hosts.
Paige Robinson led all scorers with 24 points and four rebounds, while Asinde added 18 points and five rebounds for Uganda. Hope Akello contributed 11 points in a valiant effort.
Egypt’s Raneem Elgedawy (20 points) and Nadine Mohamed (19 points) proved decisive for the home side.
Despite the loss, Uganda showcased their ability to compete against the tournament’s top team, and they’ll take lessons should they meet the Pharaohs again in the final on Saturday.
Head coach Nicholas Natuhereza acknowledged the team’s effort but emphasized the need to improve their game management.
“Egypt had a little more than us at the end and they made the winning plays. We need to work on how to finish games,” he said.
With a crucial matchup against South Sudan, who secured a famous 86-69 victory over Kenya on their end, looming, the Gazelles must regroup quickly as they look to keep their qualification hopes alive.
Their next test comes tonight at 7 pm EAT, where a victory will be vital in Uganda’s quest for a place at the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket in Ivory Coast.
